Glyphosate vote in May -- we can beat Monsanto & Co. (Petition) Empty Glyphosate vote in May -- we can beat Monsanto & Co. (Petition)

UPDATE Tuesday 11:00 CET: Fearing a rebellion, the European Commission was forced to postpone the vote until May. This was supposed to be Monsanto's day. Everyone expected European government representatives to approve another 15 year license for glyphosate weedkiller -- rushing it through for the agrochemical industry, despite cancer warnings from the World Health Organisation. But instead this was our day.

European governments one after another responded to calls from the public and scientific community, and began speaking out.

We have to keep the pressure up -- because you can bet the chemical corporations will throw everything they've got at it too.

Please sign this urgent petition and share it widely today.

EU Agriculture Ministers have completely lost the plot! The World Health Organisation (WHO) says glyphosate is "probably carcinogenic", but the EU is about to authorise the weedkiller for another 15 years -- condemning another generation of farming families and consumers to cancer risks.

There's a vote of EU government representatives on March 7 UPDATE **IN MAY** in Brussels -- so it's not too late to stop them. There are Environment Ministers, Health Ministers and others who can take a stand with us against the agrochemical giants. But we need to raise our voices above the din of industry lobbyists for the governments to hear.

Tell Europe's governments to put public health and food safety first.

Glyphosate contamination has been detected in food, clothing, personal hygiene products and even breast milk. Chemical companies including Monsanto, Bayer, Sygenta and BASF have also left their marks all over the EU's sham review process which got us here.

Instead of heeding the cancer warnings of the WHO, the EU decided to conduct a review using secret industry studies. Nothing to worry about, says industry and EU together. That's why 96 prominent experts, including almost the whole WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer, have called on governments to ignore the EU study's conclusions.

Earlier this week, another 14 scientists signed an open letter in the Environmental Health journal, saying EU estimates of tolerable exposure levels for glyphosate were based on outdated science. But the European Commission and European Agriculture Ministers seem adamant to rush through this authorisation process, putting the corporate profit interests of multinationals before sound science and public health.

Petition all 28 EU governments to vote against renewing the approval of glyphosate.

SumOfUs members have reached across the world before to stand with people resisting Monsanto and other agrochemical giants. Thanks to public pressure and sound science, many countries including France, Colombia, and Sri Lanka have placed restrictions on glyphosate. Germany's Environment Minister has started talking about a phase-out of glyphosate too. There are signs signs that give us hope. But the chemical industry has a stranglehold on most governments, so only a massive global effort can beat them.
Tell Europe not to approve glyphosate for another 15 years.

Glyphosate vote in May -- we can beat Monsanto & Co. (Petition) Empty We did it!

We did it! Fearing a rebellion from European governments, the European Commission was forced this week to postpone a vote to approve Monsanto’s glyphosate weedkiller.

Everyone expected EU approval for another 15 years of glyphosate weedkiller -- rushing it through for the agrochemical industry, despite cancer warnings from the World Health Organisation.

But scientists protested in open letters to European governments. Campaigners gathered with placards at the European Commission's building in Brussels. Thousands of SumOfUs members emailed, tweeted and shared our petition to EU leaders in English, German and French. And we funded ads on Facebook, Twitter, Google and Pinterest seen by hundreds of thousands of people in European countries where it mattered most.

It's hard to say what suddenly made Sweden, then France, the Netherlands and Italy take a stand for public health over corporate profits this time. But they did, and I believe that we were all a part of it.

The director of the European Crop Protection Association (Bayer, Dow, Monsanto, BASF, etc..) was so upset when interviewed by journalists on Tuesday, that he let slip to the Guardian that this only happened because "countries were influenced by significant political pressure from the environment committee of the European parliament, NGOs and the precautionary principle." That's right -- the agrochemical industry could have made away like bandits this week, if it hadn't been for democracy getting in the way!

But the issue is up for a vote again in May, and Monsanto & Co. will be digging into their war chests to fund lobbying and propaganda like we've never seen before. We've won a delay -- we can't afford to drop the pressure now.

Much of Monsanto's business hinges on sales of its glyphosate-based herbicide, Roundup, and of crops that have been genetically engineered to tolerate it. Our win this week must have sent shockwaves through the company and chemical industry. The head of one of Europe's chemical industry lobby group even said he was "upset that countries were influenced by significant political pressure" in not re-approving glysophate!

Now Monsanto has until May to try and line up European governments to approve glyphosate for another 15 years. So we have to stop them. And now we know that we can.

Please, share the campaign on Facebook today so we're even bigger in number when the next fight comes.

In solidarity,

Eoin, Paul and the rest of the team at SumOfUs
