Say No To Roundup in Europe (petition) Empty Say No To Roundup in Europe (petition)

Post by Spiral Mon Apr 11, 2016 9:09 pm

UPDATE Tuesday 11:00 CET: Fearing a rebellion, the European Commission was forced to postpone the vote until May. This was supposed to be Monsanto's day. Everyone expected European government representatives to approve another 15 year license for glyphosate weedkiller -- rushing it through for the agrochemical industry, despite cancer warnings from the World Health Organisation. But instead this was our day.

European governments one after another responded to calls from the public and scientific community, and began speaking out.

We have to keep the pressure up -- because you can bet the chemical corporations will throw everything they've got at it too.

Please sign this urgent petition and share it widely today.

EU Agriculture Ministers have completely lost the plot! The World Health Organisation (WHO) says glyphosate is "probably carcinogenic", but the EU is about to authorise the weedkiller for another 15 years -- condemning another generation of farming families and consumers to cancer risks.

There's a vote of EU government representatives on March 7 UPDATE **IN MAY** in Brussels -- so it's not too late to stop them. There are Environment Ministers, Health Ministers and others who can take a stand with us against the agrochemical giants. But we need to raise our voices above the din of industry lobbyists for the governments to hear.

Tell Europe's governments to put public health and food safety first.

Glyphosate contamination has been detected in food, clothing, personal hygiene products and even breast milk. Chemical companies including Monsanto, Bayer, Sygenta and BASF have also left their marks all over the EU's sham review process which got us here.

Instead of heeding the cancer warnings of the WHO, the EU decided to conduct a review using secret industry studies. Nothing to worry about, says industry and EU together. That's why 96 prominent experts, including almost the whole WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer, have called on governments to ignore the EU study's conclusions.

Earlier this week, another 14 scientists signed an open letter in the Environmental Health journal, saying EU estimates of tolerable exposure levels for glyphosate were based on outdated science. But the European Commission and European Agriculture Ministers seem adamant to rush through this authorisation process, putting the corporate profit interests of multinationals before sound science and public health.

Petition all 28 EU governments to vote against renewing the approval of glyphosate. https://action.sumofus.org/a/stop-eu-glyphosate-15-years/?sub=homepage

SumOfUs members have reached across the world before to stand with people resisting Monsanto and other agrochemical giants. Thanks to public pressure and sound science, many countries including France, Colombia, and Sri Lanka have placed restrictions on glyphosate. Germany's Environment Minister has started talking about a phase-out of glyphosate too. There are signs signs that give us hope. But the chemical industry has a stranglehold on most governments, so only a massive global effort can beat them.
Tell Europe not to approve glyphosate for another 15 years.

Say No To Roundup in Europe (petition) Empty Let Europe go glyphosate-free!

Post by Spiral Mon May 30, 2016 8:20 pm

une 6 could be the day that European governments give in to pressure from the agrochemical lobby and approve glyphosate weedkiller for years more, despite warnings from the UN's International Agency for Research on Cancer. Or it could be Monsanto & Co.'s worst Monday ever.

We helped to deny Big Ag their victory twice already, when the European Commission failed to win enough support from governments in March and in May to give glyphosate a green light.

The Commission needs the approval of 16 European governments, representing at least 65% of the EU's population. Even states with a massive agrochemical industry like Germany can be moved by people power, but other states will put agrochemical industry interests above public safety concerns. It's down to the wire - so we need to raise a ruckus like never before:

Tell EU governments not to approve glyphosate weedkiller, when they meet in Brussels next Monday to consider the European Commission's proposal.

Multinationals like Monsanto, Bayer, Syngenta, Dow and DuPont have made fortunes selling glyphosate weedkiller and glyphosate-tolerant genetically engineered crops (GMOs) around the world. But glyphosate's European license is set to expire at the end of June.

A spokesperson from the Commission said recently: "If no decision is taken before 30 June, glyphosate will be no longer authorised in the EU and member states will have to withdraw authorisations for all glyphosate based products.” We are so close!

Thanks to the massive efforts of environmentalists, activists, independent scientists and critical journalists, it looks like the tides might finally be turning against Monsanto and glyphosate. Two times in a row, European governments have refused to back the Commission's reckless proposal to relicense glyphosate. It's time for Brussels and the big chemicals corporations to understand that people want to detox our food system. Let's make glyphosate history.

Sign and share the petition to the 28 EU member states, asking them not to approve glyphosate weedkiller next Monday.

Say No To Roundup in Europe (petition) Empty Last chance to change things !!!

Post by Spiral Mon Jun 20, 2016 10:30 am

We’re one step away from a glyphosate-free EU. For the third time in a row, member states have refused to back the Commission’s proposed licence extension for weedkiller glyphosate.

But the Commission won’t take no for an answer, and will try to force through a last-ditch appeal in Brussels June 24. Otherwise, a whole lot of Monsanto’s Roundup will be coming down from shelves across Europe this year.

Sign the petition https://actions.sumofus.org/a/tell-the-eu-commission-glyphosate-s-time-is-up/

Instead of heeding the cancer warnings of the WHO, the European Commission has tried to do Monsanto’s dirty work by pushing through a licence extension despite experts agreeing that a ban of the pesticide is necessary to prevent contamination of our food, water, and soil.

Tell EU member states to deal the final blow and reject any extension of the glyphosate licence on June 24.

Today we’re part of a mass movement opposing the continued use of Monsanto’s favorite pesticide -- from which contamination has been detected in food, clothing, personal hygiene products, and even breast milk. And governments are finally taking notice.

France, Germany, Italy, and others all abstained from the last vote on the glyphosate extension, reflecting growing consensus that the pesticide is bad news for the people of Europe. And if we can make sure the Commission fails again to gain a qualified majority on June 24, glyphosate’s time will be up by the end of the month.
